In 1942, Japanese aircraft shot down a KNILM flight on its way to Broome, Australia, killing four people. In 1955, a Chinese Army fighter plane shot down an Air India flight from Hong Kong to Jakarta, Indonesia, killing 16 people on board, including American diplomat Henry W. Antheil Jr. and British actor Leslie Howard. In 1967, a bomb exploded on Cyprus Airways Flight 284 from Athens, Greece, to Cyprus, killing all 66 on board; no one claimed responsibility. In 1970, a Swissair flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Tel Aviv, Israel, crashed due to a bomb explosion. In 1973, Israeli fighters shoot down a Libyan Arab Airlines plane after it strayed into the airspace of the Sinai Peninsula, killing 108 people on the board. The perpetrators of this crash were never discovered. In 1976, a Middle East Airlines flight exploded near Beirut, Lebanon, killing at least 80 people on its approach to Dubai, and a Cubana Airlines flight explodes near Barbados, killing 73 on the way to Barbados.
