His family moved from the West Bank to Jordan and then Kuwait after the Six-Day War in 1967, and he later joined Hamas, a spinoff of the Muslim Brotherhood. He was the leader of the Hamas chapter in Kuwait in 1990 and later led its Hamas chapter there in Jordan. Meshaaal was briefly imprisoned in Jordan for illegal political activity in 1999, but was released after his release. In 2012, Meshaaled made his first official visit to Jordan since being expelled in 1999. He signed a reconciliation agreement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and sides with the opposition in the Syrian civil war, and later played a role in Hamas in the Palestinian parliamentary elections.
