Colorado Springs foodies pick award-winning food trucks
On the first Sunday of June the second 719 Battle of the Food Trucks took place on the Meanwhile Block, 425 S. Sierra Madre St. There were 39 food truck chefs from Southern Colorado there to go fry basket to fry basket for the chance to win the “Best in Colorado Springs” and the coveted food truck trophy. As a co-judge, I can say it was not an easy task for us to eat our way through the many varied cuisines presented by cooking crews. On the first Sunday of June, the second annual 719 Battle of the Food Trucks took place on the Meanwhile Block, 425 S. Sierra Madre St. Thirty-nine food truck chefs from southern Colorado gathered there for the chance to win the “Best in Colorado Springs” and the coveted food truck trophy.
As one of the judges, I can say it was not an easy task to eat our way through the many varied cuisines presented by cooking crews. There were offerings from a world of flavors, including Mexican, Filipino, Italian, Salvadoran, French, Korean, Creole and Hawaiian, to name a few. Add to that some classic American fare like barbecue, grilled cheese, ice cream, soul food, fried fish, fried chicken, cupcakes and sausage.
At the end of several hours of sampling, we five judges deliberated about our favorites to narrow down to the final winners.
First place, Bowl in the City.
The attendees voted for their favorite bites and awarded Creole Roots as their top choice.
The day’s event supported the mission of Angels of America’s Fallen to encourage and fund healthy, positive activities for the children of fallen firefighters, military and law enforcement. For more information about the food truck contest, visit facebook.com/719BattleOfTheFoodTrucks.
Food Truck Tuesdays returned to the grounds of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum downtown. Each Tuesday will feature 10 trucks from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There are 20 total trucks, trading off every other week. For the lineup, visit tinyurl.com/4fyhczz6.

Famous Dave’s, 5245 N. Academy Blvd., is hosting the second All-Star BBQ Championship, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday . The All-Star BBQ Series, in partnership with the World Food Championship, will feature celebrity and local pit masters facing off in multicategory barbecue cook-offs at 13 of the Famous Dave’s BBQ regional franchises.
“This is our second year running the competition,” said Ashley Brown, who with her husband, Trystan Brown, owns the Colorado Springs franchises of Texas T-Bone Steakhouse and Famous Dave’s BBQ. “Last year was a great success. We are expecting an even larger turnout this year.”
The fun day of ‘cue is free to the public to enjoy the friendly competition with the following local pit master teams: Meat Machine BBQ, Pit Pirates BBQ, Rum Runners’ BBQ, Ribs & Whiskey BBQ, Chuchoo & Roosters and Competition BBQ.
“These teams will be competing for their share of a $5,000 prize purse as well as a Golden Ticket invitation to compete in the World Food Championship this fall in Indianapolis for a shot at winning a prize purse that exceeds $300,000,” Ashley Brown said. “They will be cooking up three different dishes — chicken, ribs and a wild card, which means it can be anything they dream up, it just has to be made on their smoker.”
The competition will have judges as well as a people’s choice award.
“Attendees will get to try chicken wings prepared by the all-star competitors and samples of our own Famous Dave’s BBQ,” Ashley Brown said.
There will be Pepsi and Kurvball Whiskey samples, giveaways and raffles throughout the event, games for all ages, and a live DJ.
Modern Market Eatery, 3015 New Center Point, is offering a free dinner 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Each guest will receive one entrée, fountain drink, dessert and swag while supplies last.
